It is a common misconception that so-called good people go to heaven when they die. Nearly everyone who passes on seems to have people relaying the same message, "At least now he/she is in a better place." Jesus reveals that most people do not end up in Heaven, saying, "Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it." The enemy is content to have you believe that if you live a decent life, you will avoid hell. This is a lie.
First of all, who is good? Jesus said, "No one is good but One, that is, God." So if good people go to Heaven and no one is good, then no one would go to Heaven based on their own goodness, because based on our own merit, we would all be doomed to hell. Fortunately, being good or bad is not what our salvation is decided on.
Those who belong to God are His. These are the ones who will go to Heaven. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ (Holy Spirit) is not His. We receive the Holy Spirit by faith in Jesus. We must then walk according to the Spirit. This is spiritual obedience that those who love the Lord will abide in.
If our salvation was based in our goodness, then we would all be condemned. Our salvation is based in righteousness (not our own righteousness but the righteousness of God). Those who are clothed in God's righteousness by faith and spiritual obedience in Jesus will be saved. We put on Jesus by following the leading of the Holy Spirit, who God sent to live within us once we first believed.
